Chicanes

3:21 minutes (3.07 MB)

This piece was composed as part of an interactive installation called SPORTS which premiered at The Front gallery in NOLA on July 10th, 2010.  The installation featured videos by Dave Greber, and moveable chicanes built by Adam Montegut and others.  It is inspired by the baroque era (fugue in particular); also, by Switched on Bach.  Clearly.

FIVTET

This is one of my earliest microtonal works in which I explored 5 and 10 tone equal temperaments.  The tones one hears were sampled from an acoustic guitar, with the microtones being achieved via a slide.

I composed this piece for the 'microphone',

an instrument I invented and designed based on the sarod.

My sarod guru Atish Mukhopadhyay

is the performer on this track.

His improvisations on the 'rag' implied by my composition can be heard at the openig of the piece.
